Objective: To help you become a more efficient game developer by getting your editor panels setup professionally!

You have downloaded and installed Unity and you are ready to get started on your game development journey. Let’s now dive into getting your Unity editor setup.

This is the initial screen that you are provided with when you log into Unity.

Default Unity Editor Layout

Unity has this magical feature that allows you to drag and snap the panels into new positions by simply pressing and holding the left mouse button on the tab that you want to drag and then simply letting go when it is snapped into a location that you are happy with.

One major downside to the default setup is that the Scene view and the Game view are utilising the same panel and you need to switch between these tabs to see what is happening in real time (game view).

Dragging your panels around to the below setup is going to help you become a more efficient game developer:

Now, we want to save this layout so the next time you create a game you can quickly get back to this setup. In the top right corner you will see a drop down box that says ‘Default’. We are going to click on this press ‘Save Layout’. Name this what you like and the next time you open up a game if this setting doesn’t automatically work you can simply change it from here instead of moving all the boxes around again.
